Why did Library Materials and Books need to be bound?

 

 

 

 

The activity of library material binding is an effort to preserve the library materials. Internationally, The International Organization Standardization (ISO) has established ISO 14416: 200: information and documentation on the requirements for book binding, periodical publications, serial publications and other paper documents for the use in libraries and PUSDOKINFO institutions. In that standard, it had mention about the binding procedures, methods, material standards, binding models, and international binding techniques. According to the library media, bindery is an activity of assembling or arranging the pages or loose sheets into one, in the order in which they should be, which protected with special cover using materials and specific bindery tools so as to be easily to use and to protect physical and the value information of its book.

 

Why did books or library materials need to be bound? According to Cockerell (1968: 17): "The book is bound to make pages are arranged orderly and to protect its book." With an order arrangement, the book can be easily used. For the damaged or broken books, re-bindings are needed to maintain the physical form of the book and the value of the information inside so it can be reused by users. The books which are damaged in some parts only such as loose stitches or glue, damage in the content or just broken on its cover can be fixed by repairing or re-binding. On the other hand, if an unbound books or library materials didn’t be fixed, it will be damaged and dusted. The library must keep its collections and numbers of nation cultural works which known as nation assets to preserve the information inside.

The purpose of this conservation activity is maintaining the library materials long-lasting. While the objectives can be summarized as follows:

1. Save the value of the information in the document

2. Save the physical of document

3. Overcoming the lack of space constrains

4. Speed up information acquistion

One of the library materials that can be preserved was the previous newspaper. As newspapers contained a lot of information and histories from the past events, the library need to maintain the authenticity of its physical form as well as its information that can be used for our future generations.
